Some details are in the notice's attachments, which this summary didn't read. Check the attachments on SAM.gov.
DARPA is looking for research approaches for its Firefox program, which aims to build non-invasive brain-computer interfaces using an optical system that records neural signals in humans. The notice text is a short program description and does not give a place, contract length or award details.
Watch out for
- Advanced research topic. The work is cutting-edge biotechnology and optics R&D, so a small business would need deep technical expertise in this area to be competitive.
DARPA's Firefox program is soliciting approaches to overcome key technological hurdles
- Submission rules not in the text. The notice does not say how to submit, what format is required, or how proposals will be judged, so you must find these in the full solicitation documents.
Read from the notice text only.

Full notice text from SAM.gov
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has developed a non-invasive coherent optical system capable of recording neural signals in humans. To expand this foundational technology and enable the development of revolutionary, non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), DARPA's Firefox program is soliciting approaches to overcome key technological hurdles: 1) development of components enabling dynamic rastering/scanning of the incoming coherent optical signal to target multiple regions of interest and 2) development of new data processing architectures beyond the digital domain to handle the high data rates and computational burden inherent to scaling the amount of neural data recorded by the optical system. The ultimate goal of the Firefox program is to use these innovations to develop a 100-channel, non-invasive BCI with 50-micron spatial and 100-microsecond temporal resolution.
